Big (Fake) Amp Metal, a Genre is Born

From the humble world of small-amp metal, today we take you to the the heights of big-amp metal. In the image above a long-rumored fact about metal is exposed...no, I'm not talking about the fact Tom Araya is a christian, or that Crisco runs through Kerry King's veins... but rather that bands like Immortal don't really own that many Marshall stacks. Makes sense, since they go through the PA system, and black metal is all about appearances anyway...but it's still funny. I wonder if the second bass drum even has a pedal attached to it.

Years ago, long before I ever heard their lite-country jam-nastics, I saw a picture of Jerry Garcia standing in front of one of the Grateful Dead's massive speaker columns. Impressed with what I was sure must be the most fuckin' super intense metal bands ever ("One of their albums is called 'Skullfuck'? Whhooaaa!")I photocopied said photo and stuck it up on my wall.

Not long after I heard "Truckin'" on the radio. Whoops!

Anyway, this photo and my story just go to show how truth the old "appearance's can be deceiving" saw.

Not sure if this is meant to be said with a knowing wink, but I've certainly heard of drummers who would rather use a double pedal than bother tuning / sound checking two different bass drums and looking after two pedals... but appearances matter.

  5. Metal bands have been doing that stuff for years. Pretty much every 80’s metal band did it to some degree. And before anyone gets all offended, you have to remember that metal has always, napologetically, been at least partly about the show. If you called them on it, they'd probably just be like "well, duh." One or two of the stacks are always real (you’ve got to have an amp), but everything else is an empty speaker-less cabinet, or a prop like what is shown in the photo. That many amplifiers going at once would be, at best, unnecessary and would probably sound really bad.

  7. Hellfest 2010 was there as well that's why there were so many sound problems during their show...

  9. The Dead actually pioneered the "Wall of Sound" that a lot of metal bands have attempted to copy over the years. Jerry and crew were the masters of intense musical excess. You would never find a fake stack at a dead show.

  10. Yeah it was Hellfest... what a ridiculous act.... pure crap..

I recall seeing SLAYER with walls of Marshalls back in '88... real marshalls haha!

  11. There's two ENGL 100 watt tops right there in the pic, they are plugged in and turned on. yes, they are plugged into real 4x12 cabs, with real speakers. These are mic'd and run through the PA system. That's how it's done. The guitarist is still actually playing the guitar, the drummer is still actually drumming, etc.

The prop Marshalls are supplied BY Marshall, rather than shipping dozens of cabs that won't be used, which is how they used to do it back in the 80's.

When you saw Slayer, Metallica, and Judas Priest rocking out in front of 140 Marshcll cabs--tthey weren't all pluged in, you DO realize that, right?

    duh.

  14. Back in the 80's, finnish heavy metal pioneers had seen bands with a walls of amps. So they bought multiple stacks and used them. Their drummer nearly went deaf and later when they played with the bands they had seen they we're pretty marvelled at. "WTF, those amps are all real? Are you insane?!"

  17. Actually Black metal has often been met with hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic and anti-Christian standpoint of many artists. where to buy a research paper
