Metal video potpourri

From time to time, I have been known to fall into what I lovingly refer to as an "internet wormhole." Such an event usually starts out innocently enough, I'll remember a certain historical event, or perhaps a building or person that I'd like to look up on the interweb. Somehow, five hours later, I find myself still in front of my computer, reading about a related subject in greater detail than anyone in the world really needs to. Drunk with (sometimes useless) knowledge, I stumble outside to realize it's no longer light out. The hours have passed, and all I have to show for it is that I now know way too much about how Manuel Noriega was taken down as Panama's leader. I will also know why architect Philip Johnson was passed up for the Museum Tower project, and yet chose to live in the building after it was finished. Did I need this information? Did I really need to know the entire history about the venerable Jackson Dinky guitar? No.

Sometimes, however, the internet wormholes I fall into have even less redeemable value than the ones having to do with Central American history, or slammin' six or seven string instruments. Yes, sometimes, I merely spend hours watching endless amounts of stupid videos on YouTube, and end up with nothing to show for it. It's for this very reason that I've decided to share some of my recent finds with you today. These may not be the funniest videos you've ever seen, but I feel that in sharing them with you, I have given my life greater meaning...so this is an entirely selfish affair. Dig in, please, so I'll feel better about the time I wasted online.

Evil Black Metal Teens
(Please note the crappy guitars being held as evidence)

Report about death metal. Serious Stuff. This video is from the era before Chris Barnes made EVERYONE laugh, back when he only made almost everyone laugh by his stupidity and Skeletor-like face.

King Diamond shares his thoughts about theology with the world. Perhaps the most evil thing about this video, however, are the tacky curtains behind Kind Diamond. Also highly evil is his mustache.

Overkill gives a very in-depth interview, and band members share their numerous theories about life and music. How on earth is it that most of us, as young men and women, took interviews like this seriously? I know I certainly did. It never occurred to me back then that some dudes from New Jersey who worked third shift at machine shops may not have all the answers. Shocking.

  2. I think Ritual received the most ever media coverage for a Wild Rags band! Kudos!

  5. 'Anti-Peace Anti-Life' sweet. I also liked how Evil D said 'It's Fast and aggressive' then they play the slowest song on the album...

I used to think Metal musicians had all the answers. I think it's something to do with dumb youth. I also think it's more to do with my devotion of my life to music and needing an older brother kind of figure to look up to. The thinking went along this kind of way: they write the stuff I like to listen to, they produce the album's artwork that I like stare at whilst listening to their music, so we must have something in common: As they are older than me I can listen to them for advice, no matter how dumb they sound when they open their mouths.

For instance, that Evil D interview, when he is asked who the Devil is and who Satan is, I as a youth would have been whooping with joy, when he replies they are himself. Kind of; 'Sock it to 'em Dave! He's saying shit that's blowing their minds!' Now I just think it's a kind of sad, but that's what adult experience has brought, y'know?

  6. P.S. Mom and Pop Peres: Brilliant, how to destroy your credibility in a few short sentences...

  7. i think i admired certain people in bands, because they seemed to be saying the stuff i wish i could say to teachers and authority figures. perhaps the fact that i thought some of them (not all) were half-way bright speaks volumes about my own stupidity then, and thus now.

  8. I love the Vincent interview. You see where Gahl got his interview style from. "I'm Satan", then no explanation just to freak out the reporter. I loved seeing the shots from in and outside Aces Records in Tampa. I practically lived there for a few years.

  13. that Gaahl "satan" thing was awesome... as serious as the dude may be with his devil worship there had to be like a high five moment after they filmed that shit... that was certainly the high point of that movie.

The videos on here were rad though... Strange that the cops took the guitars as evidence and that Jeffrey dahmer puts a face on the anger of a generation... ummmm... that sounds kindo gay to me... just saying...

anyway- over all, I have to say that the king sounds like a reasonable dude... and yeah overkill sound pretty retarded now, but they were probably like 20 years old or something... I said a lot of stupid shit when I was 20 years old... and it was awesome.

strange how these things go though... Dudes like that were like big brothers to me when I was younger too, but now as I start to surpass all of them in age the dynamic changes...
It's strange to think about what I'll be listening to when I'm 40 or 50... like will the bands be made of people in my own general age group who are thinking about mature 40/50 year old shit, or will I still be listening to a bunch of pissed 20 year olds? and if the latter (which it'll probably be, though I doubt it would be much different from the shit I listen to now) I wonder what exactly I'll get from it...
