Listening to Metallica: Straight out TORTURE

Last week James Hetfield, the skater teen, turned middle-aged redneck, made some statements about "Enter Sandman" being used to torture prisoners in Guantamo Bay.
He said "Part of me is proud is because they chose Metallica". Uhm... James, what the military is basically telling you is that your music is SO BAD, playing it to prisoners being tortured is a good idea. Do you get it? Listening to Metallica is torture! "Enter Sandman" is such a bad song that prisoners would rather be water boarded than put up with 5 more seconds of that shit. I guess this guy Mohammed al-Qahtani said that listening to the track while being tortured brought him to tears. No joke. This guy actually cried when he heard Metallica! Shit, I have never cried while listening to Enter Sandman, but I have cried during The Unforgiven. That song is fucking terrible. James "Jed Clampett" Hetfield went on to say that he thought maybe the torture technique worked, not because Metallica's music sucked, but because "It represents something that [terrorists] don't like — maybe freedom, aggression…" Hello?! Earth calling James! These people are accused of being terrorists, "aggression" is sorta part of the job!

Our favorite NRA member has not aged well.

In any case, I'm glad the US of A is still kicking terrorists' asses the best way they know how. (please add sarcastic tone to the last sentence.) The one thing I'd suggest to the brave soilders in Cuba doing all that torturing is that next time they should just use songs from St. Anger. Shit, if they had me tied down and threaten to play the whole CD, I'd confess to some shit. I'd make up stuff just to get them to push the stop button.

This is the James I'll remember forever.

Hmmm...come to think of it, St. Anger, Load and Re-load are probably on a list in the Geneva Protocol, forbidding countries from using them as torture. I wonder how long it's gonna take them to add Death Magnetic to the list. It's that bad, believe me.

Long gone are the days of bullet belts, cheap beer, Venom shirts, skateboards, awesome riffs, intelligence and common sense.

Well, James "Cowardly Lion" Hetfield finished his eloquent statement with: "We've got nothing to do with this and we're trying to be as apolitical as possible." I guess "Disposable Heroes", "And Justice for All" and the whole "Don't Tread on Me" thing is not very political? Metallica stopped being "political" around the same time they stopped being metal.

  2. i'm know there's some real shady characters in northern california, some insane white trash. but how on earth a guy form san francisco can become a raging southerner is beyond me. someone from california will no doubt point out that james is actually from ________, some backwoods place that is trashy as hell. with all due respect, unless you've seen the hills in west virginia, kentucky or, hell, even north carolina....you don't know white trash. as such, james has become what he one hated the most. a poser. remember that "kill 'em all" was a statement made by the band against posers. oh, how the kinda-mighty have fallen. and that gut. ooofah.

  3. James Hetfield's descent from all-time metal God to yodelin' hillbilly has been one of, if not the, most disturbing & disheartening turn of events the genre has ever seen. Some may be too young to truly comprehend how far he's fallen, some may have simply forgotten how fierce he used to be. But 20 years ago it was unimaginable that Hetfield would become this ridiculous Ted Nugent-esque character. Lars & Kirk, yeah, that I could see, those guys were always fags. But James, that's something different.

  4. Now, many people don't agree with this--mostly due to age and generational issues, but Metallica has sucked since the Black Album came out. That was a rock album--not metal. They were filling arenas on the Justice tour, and then they were filling stadiums on the Black tour. Simply put, they fuckin' sold out. They made an album of more accessible material so they could broaden their fanbase. In the process of gorfing proverbial shaft, they shattered the illusion held by so many who considered themselves true. The actual image of being "true" is, in itself, just an image. But, it was a horrible, identity shattering moment for those of us who called ourselves "metalheads." Certainly, it raped the heiney of our innocence. It truly is a miracle that there are those of us who stubbornly clung to the belief that you could remain "metal" in the face of such events as friends "growing out of it" and former favorite bands sitting on the plunger-handles of gayness.

  6. Cowardly Lion? I think he looks more like Tom Waits gluttonous white trash, convicted pedophile nephew or something. It's sad to think those guys may have even led Robert Trujillo to a life of douchebaggery as well. Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised if Ron McGovney is sitting in some backwoods trailer park (or his moms basement) drinking a case of Schlitz Ice, and laughing at how much cock these guys smoke now.

  7. i think the saddest part about the whole thing is how they keep saying "this new album is gonna be a return to form"...i mean, the last good thing they did was fucking TWENTY YEARS AGO! at some point it just becomes ridiculous. at least a lot of others bands just say forget it and only play stuff from when they used to be good (i'm looking at you, anthrax) but that may be even sadder...but if it's your mealticket, then what can you do?

  11. yes, the black album is where it all started to go downhill. some would even say that And Justice was where it all went wrong...but the black album was certainly a disaster. i actually don't think they really were all that planned out in trying to reach a wider base, though using Bob Rock was certainly a step in that direction. I actually think that they just started to run out of ideas, they started liking worse music and writing even more boring stuff. simple.

  12. I'm glad I don't give a shit about Metallica anymore. Too many years of waiting for a decent release, and that never happened. Anyway, I'm glad because if Death Magnet would have been released 8-12 years ago, when I still cared and was stupid enough to think that at some point they were going to record something good and leave behind the black album and shit that comes afterward era, I'd be really, really pissed off. Did you listen to any of the new songs??? I think they have 3 singles. They are terrible. And the thing that I can't understand is 16 year old kids saying Metallica is back. Back to what?? You are 16 y.o!! Back for you means they are playing the same shit that in St. Anger (just check some of the reviews at www.metal-archives.com)!! Anyway, I realize it still pisses me off, but not as much as when they came with load and the rest of the crap.

  15. I still think that "The black album" is the perfect thrash album, speaking in terms of sound. Really clear, heavy and powerful, guitars especially, and unlike AJFA you can hear everything.

Artistically, on the other hand, it's the death of thrash. Riffs and song structures are simplistic, but Ulrich drumming is the worst. He plays with the handbrake on!

  17. i can honestly say that my comedic obession with the band is highly, highly influenced by the films they've made about themselves. when you see james practicing his yodeling technique, lars selling his art collection, kirk crying and riding a horse with a cowboy hat....its comedy gold. beyond that, i guess it's one of the early bands that many of us came across that was remotely metal back in 1988-1989. at the time, they were fairly "underground", at least it seemed that way to you when you were very young in the 80s. they were actually huge already, but that was the effect it had on you. i first heard Kiss when I was 4 years old, and as a result I will from time to time post about them...cus they too are such an insane mess/joke/disaster.

  18. The Black Album is certainly where it all went to shit, I don't think I've heard anyone seriously debate otherwise. "And Justice..." has some of their best material, but by the middle of that record they had also ran out of Mustane riffs, Burton harmonies and what little there was left of Hetfield's savant inspiration.

"And Justice..." is a fascinating listen for many reasons. The production on is it perfect as far as mood-setting goes at the expense of bass. At the time (1986-7) Ulrich was impressed and influenced by Texas underground technothrash originators Watchtower. Seriously if you want to understand what happened between "Master..." and "And Justice..." listen to their two records. Ulrich wanted to make a record that was in that vein, heavily sociopolitical, sterile-sounding, technically labyrinthine an apocalyptic record more or less. Don't forget bassist of Watchtower mk.II, Doug Keyser auditioned for Metallica (and somehow, didn't get the part but that's a whole different discussion) at that time. This was 1987, the Cold War was heading to its peak and nobody knew if we'd be around in 10 years anymore. That was the mood that made "And Justice For All".

Obviously, Ulrich's aspirations were not matched by his ability to play the drums, Hetfield's ability to compose or pretty much anyone's in the band to outdo the likes of Watchtower. So the record is highly artificial. It was cut and pasted together by Flemming Rasmussen as best he could (the rumour was it that none of the tracks by the time it was sent to mastering was played all the way through by Ulrich, and the final 'takes' were assembled from bits and pieces of many many takes). Nonetheless, half the material is amazing. One, Dyer's Eve, Blackened, And Justice For All, To Live Is to Die (besides an idiotic chugga chugga section towards the end). That stuff was real. It wasn't goofy dad metal. Hetfield was ferocious. The music was cerebral but visceral too. Hetfield never was any sort of lyric genious but at least he was honest and he gave it his best. Some of the best music they ever did is in there.

The other half of the record is where you can start to see what would happen to Metallica just 3-4 years later. Take 'Harvester of Sorrow', it's an okayish track, but it's full of mid-tempo chugga-chugga, it's like what Sad Bad True would be later on. Aimless and hitting exactly one mood. It's the sound of Hetfield trying to write the other half of a brilliant record and falling short without Mustane's deposition of riffs (who at the same time was doing quite a lot of magic with "Peace Sells..." and a bit later with "Rust In Peace") and without Burton's disposition for proper orchestration and tempered composition. Metallica at their best were three brilliant people. He just wasn't enough on his own. Hetfield never learned music, and as we say, most talented Heavy Metal guitarists have a finite amount of instinctively good riffs they can write before they run out and have to turn to learning music and technique before they can mix them up again. Hetfield ran out of his in the middle of recording "And Justice...", and it shows.

It's a piece of HM history and very interesting for many reasons, it's of course uneven, but it's not bullshit, it's for real, and you can hear it even today and it's still potent.

The Black Album meant little to nothing, however. The sound is great but for what? Vacuous songs about being on the road? It's been a steady roll down since then. From the prideful unapproachable heights to the pit of feces-splattered retardation, us that became metalheads from 1993 and onwards have seen the fall. One shitty record at a time. You can pretty safely distinguish between people who love HM for how it sounds and people who love HM for what it means by where exactly they place their Metallica drop-off point. If they can stomach 'The Black Album' then they probably never read the lyrics and just want something vaguely crunchy and angry-sounding to headbang to.

As it was stated above, it's a miracle some of us still consider ourselves metalheads if you think of the context of the 90's.

  19. some of the better material on and justice has extremely dry production and yet i love it, it sets the mood for sure. the production on the black album...well, its like saying that Hitler kept the trains running on time. Kinda' hard to congratulate him for that, when there's some much to...uh...dislke about the guy. nahmean? But then again, I like unusual/bad production sometimes. I love SOuth of Heaven (ah...the loud drums), i love the Excruciating Terror demo (that snare, oh that snare) and other records that are commonly thought of as badly produced.

  20. If Justice had the same production as the The Black Album, it wouldn't work. It's perfect the way it is.

  24. It is all about the money. They got big, got rich, and got complacent. It must be hard to stay in touch with real people when your buying and selling million $ paintings and all your clothes are purchased at Armani. When the struggle to survive is gone and your fan base is so large that any POP Metal you send out makes you shit loads of cash. Even when your original fans refuse buy it.

Here is to their success. They deserve it. Kill'em All to Injustice was a great ride.

The New album sucks. It is way over produced and has no heart. They still will make millions and sell out shows worldwide because 10 year olds will want to seem them and 40 year olds will want to relive the Thrash years in the comfort of club seat in a highly secure stadium.

  25. ok, dudes this will piss you off and none of you will agree with me but........

Justice is the downfall of Metallica. Justice is where they cut loose from the underground, got big, SLOWED DOWN, etc, etc.

that being said, dont get me wrong...i LOVE justice. it is a great album, but let's be honest guys, it was their descent into the mainstream and Metallica died with Cliff.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You're right, Savage -- I do fiercely disagree with you. The only good Metallica albums are the "No Life 'Til Leather" demo and "Load". Even old Metallica is like metal training wheels for hardcore kids.

That's why these claims of their return to greatness are so hilarious. It's like if Anvil kept claiming with every new album that it was some return to thrash perfection. If Anvil sold 20 million albums, would their music be any good?

    Duh! Of course it would.

  27. anymore, they're a mainstream topic not worth discussing. they've become as heavy metal as a wrigley's gum wrapper.

  28. Metallica are simply answering that age old question once and for all "Is it better to burn out or fade away"? only problem is they refuse to fade the fuck away,
but I guess if you burn out you won't have any money left over to go shopping for armani flip flops.

  29. Someone mentioned Kiss & it's funny how very Kiss-like Metallica's career path is. Both bands rode early underground credibility into massive mainstream popularity. Both bands gambled with their popularity by embracing (what they felt was) a far more commercially accessible sound. Both bands responded to criticism by releasing utterly bizarre & unexplainable albums. Both bands then released material touted as being as good as anything they've ever done. Both bands are dominated by a pair of egomaniacs who feel they are the brains behind the success & both bands creative output suffered mightily after losing a member whose contributions have since been minimized.

If these similarities continue, we can expect the following: Metallica is at the same point on the timeline that Kiss was right before they took off the makeup & embarked on a decade-long run of epic gayness. Expect Hetfield to put the band on hiatus after the current tour & embark on some kind of country-hillbilly music project. He will gain a fair amount of notoriety, much like how Kiss glommed on to the hair metal scene of the 80's.

After this dies out, he'll gather the band plus Mustaine & Newstead for an unplugged session after which they will begin drinking heavily again & announce the Alcoholica, Too tour, coming soon to a city near you! then they'll milk it for ten years, just like Kiss.

  31. I'm was geniunely shocked to think that Metallica fans as you say you are do not like anything Metallica have done since Cliff died! Some of you are right in saying that the band died with CLiff, and Hetfield and Kirk agreed with that sentiment when they were interviewed by Tommy Vance! They continued to do the best they could without the GODLIKE Burton, and they did produce some awsome songs over the years since then. 2*4 is banging tune, Harvester of Sorrow makes my hair stand on end, and Suicide & Redemption on the new album is fucking electrifying.

I have followed Metallica from I was 15, when I heard a bootleg of Kill Em All, right upto Battle of the Bands, where they trashed all other pretend METAL of the stage, with the help of a god at their side...BURTON! They kept the dream alive for me, and have entertained me at every live show I have seen them do with style and charisma, that they are not afraid to portray....hench the film 'Some Kind of Monster', what other bands have shown a true picture of themselves as fuking human?!

If you feel that they have failed you, then sell all there stuff on Ebay and let the new generation carry the flag of metal you woop ass pussies!!

If metallica came out in tutus singing girly shit, I would still rock to it....how can you forget their past and what they have done for the METAL, you have sold out not them!

  34. My 2 cents: I had ordered "No Life til Leather" in 1982 and received it within short time. A guy named Lars had sent a letter and some stickers too. Very nice and the demo really did shred (like some people said). In 1983, "Kill 'em all" was unleashed and believe me, it was (together with Slayer) a SHOCK. I had been to rehersal sessions of Hellhammer the same year and that impressed me too, but the clean (if you compare ...) power of Kill em all (and Show no Mercy - one of the evilest records ever released!) was plain simple unheard of before. In February 1984, Metallica played their first ever gig in Europe in Switzerland, opening for Venom and they simply blew Venom out of th hall, although we all had highest expectations for Venom. Well, Venom sucked the big one, every time I saw them live.

I liked Ride the Lightning too, but when I wasyoung, I didn't like it when too many people would buythe same albums like me, so I lost interest inthe band. Somewhen inthe 90s, I heard "Unforgiven", that was the first sign of life sent out from Metallica (to me, haha). I liked it a lot and I still do. I ran out of the house and bought me a copy of the Black Album. It's a swell thing and the sound is UNREAL. Then I lost interest again. Next thing I remember were some tracks from St. Anger - not bad, I thought and quite adventurous to release a record with a drum sound like that. I thought it had more balls than Gorgoroth and 19something I had seen live about the same time (first Black MEtal gig for me since I don't know when).

Now Death Magnetic is out and I like it a lot. It's a great album, some really BIZARRE mixture of modern day Metal with glimpses of the NWOBHM ear (some of the solos and stuff sound like they come from some Persian Risk 7"). Well done, hats off. And now I'm reading these comments here, from adults - and they sound like some whiny kiddies who came to realize that it's not Santa under that costume. Get a life - it's only music. I don't give a rat's ass about James Hetfield's NRA ramblings (and I doubt he's only half as conservative as you make him be) or at which point they started to suck. To me, Master of Puppets (which is recently heard the first time - it bored me to death) was the point they "lost it". But has to do with my own biography and not with the band's history. Let's not turn everything into religion. And now I'm gonna flip Death Magnetic over again and play side 2 for the 5th time today, suckers. :-)

  37. It's funny how someone is referred to a "redneck" because he hunts. The more interesting observation is how so many of you talk about people like that as if they are some kind of narrow minded simpleton who is below you. Yet, you are the ones who are totally ignorant to another culture other than your own and the best way you know how to cope with your ignorance is to resort to junior high school insults. It's pretty obvious who the small minded simpletons are. Really, in short, a lot of you are fucking idiots. And no, I'm not a hunter. Never a day in my life. I'm just not so small minded that I resort to name calling because they are different than me. And surely not James Hetfield. I resort to name calling when people are stupid. If the man wants to hunt, awesome. The guy has a family and a life outside of your expectations of what you think he should be. So grow up.

  38. And for the guy who commented right before me... you said it brother. How can these dumb asses talk about their music and have the balls to refer to it as "training wheels" for new metal listeners? Metallica is the ONLY metal band that is still around that are making albums that anyone has even heard of or are worth a shit. I admit, I'm not as big of the fan of the newer stuff but I'm old school.
They wrote the book on metal along with a lot of other bands..... that aren't doing a damn thing any more. So yes, James put on some weight. Yes, Lars' forehead is getting bigger every year as well as Kirk's. I just saw them a couple of weeks ago and I could see James' bald spot from way up in the nose bleed seats. But who cares. They still rocked it just as good as they ever have. They are gods but not immortal. They've been doing this since a lot of you were too young to even know what the hell metal was and were probably 12 when the Load album came out. For those of us that remember when Master of Puppets, Kill em' all, And Justice and hell, even Garage Days (the first one!) came out, it's been a long and awesome ride and know better than to talk shit about the greatest Metal band to ever make our ears bleed. Fuck off and go listen to your Miley Sirus album now.

Is metal not supposed to be a genre that couldn't care less about trends fashion has nothing to do with music. the bottom line is this you posers are to preoccupied with what music is supposed to be the very hing that metallica fought against from the start you have james hetfield to thank for bringing "thrash" out of the gutter and allowing bands like slayer and anthrax to make the exact same album over and over and over again james hetfield wrote lyrics about alienation corruption being sileced by the government and that gave music critics the idea that all "thrash" bands had something significant to say sorry cannibal corpes fans eating flesh and recieiving an anal fissure from an infectious zombie doesn't count as intellegince it counts for being a whorse autistic chimp with an out of tune guitar its people like you that caused metallica to change the way they played because they relized that what they were doing in the first place wasn't being fully appreciated and if any of you punks can come up with an intellegent rebutal I would be glad to hear it but from what I've read thats doubtful

Metallica will always be the greatest heavy metal band to exist, these guys are not in their 20s drinking and partying, they're now fathers and husbands that have important responsibilities at home, but still care so much about their REAL fans that they pull off the ORION festival with tremendous success, 2. I feel bad for those of you that can't handle a change in their sound, god forbid someone trying something new, death magnetic was a big change from st. Anger in the sense they're trying to pick up the pace add the guitar solos, these guys are almost 50 and still sell out every show and still play fast paced, some bands prob couldn't play songs like Hit the Lights or Dyers Eve after 40, and 3. Take a look in the mirror, maybe a little change would do you good you fake ass posers!
