Retroview: Bllleeeeaaauuurrrrgghhh!

I believe in being honest with each other, in telling the truth to on another. And the truth is that back in the early 90s most of us Metal Inquisition staffers were pretty into grindcore, noisecore, and other genres of music other than generic death metal. It's true- I have very eclectic tastes. I mean, I'll listen to anything from Psycho to Jesus Chrust! For someone like me with such varied tastes, the Bllleeeeaaauuurrrrgghhh compilations on Slap-A-Ham Records were crucial. Although there were 3 records in the series, only the first two were really good. By the time the third one came out, the scene had been infiltrated by posers and punk rockers, so the series had pretty much jumped the shark. This isn't an MP3 blog, but since Slap-A-Ham is out of business, here's a link.

Highlights: With over 100 songs to choose from there, are a lot of good ones. But within the context of this blog, the highlights include the sick sewer sludge proto-Devourment stylings of Rottrevore, the only good Agathocles song, the best Infest song, and Impetigo. There are also lots of good bands on here that played really, really sick guttural death metal way before the style was really established, as well as the greats of noisecore like Cacofonia, 7MON and Meatshits. And Sockeye!

Lowlights: There are also dozens of awful songs on here, but fortunately they're no longer than 15 seconds, so the shitty songs are over before you know it. It being a 90s grind comp, it has tracks from Psycho and Agathocles (although, like I said, the Agathocles song is actually good). I also think Assuck is a terrible band and they are on here, featuring Rob Proctor's weak cheat-beat blasts. The Generica song is so bad that even :15 of it is hard to endure.

WTF: One thing I've noticed is that these comps feature a lot of bands who only have one good song, and it appears on these records. I sought out other records by some of these bands based on their songs here only to be very, very disappointed. For example, Splattereah, Suppuration, Dischange, and Rupture (why do all the other Rupture songs sound like crappy Dwarves songs?).

  1. Rupture....ugghhh. I remember the Impetigo song being really good...but then again, I liked the production on the Cadaver song in the Grindcrusher comp. So what do I know?

  2. Thanks to the free copy I got for being on "Son of Bleaurgh!" I discovered bands such as Disrupt, Slave State, MITB, Crossed Out and CFDL, which I'd never stumbled across otherwise. Well, maybe, but not all at once just like that. As for Rupture, a lot of their stuff up until 1993 - especially the "Corrupture" 10" - is great, but "Lust and Hate" (1994) was a HUGE disappointment. What happened?
And hey, Melvins are fantastic on "Son..."!

  3. I just pulled out the second 7" because of this post and looked at the track listing. It has a Rash of Beatings song on it--I think they only put out one seven inch, but it was totally sick--brutal crusty death metally stuff.

But yeah, funny how so much stuff around these days came out of the "powerviolence" scene.

  4. You are an idiot. Assück was freekin bad-ass. I saw them play at a house with Quadiliacha (sp?) in about '93 or '94. My pants were thoroughly rocked.

  5. assuck was a terrible napalm death ripoff with crappy drumming... and no trupmeting!

  6. graeme,
rash of beatings was on the third "bleaurgh" record. their only release was the selftitled seven inch plus a comp track or two. but you are right, amazing band!

  7. assuck was mostly impressive to short haired fools in the mid -90s. there i said it.

  8. assuck did not leave me chuffed

  9. Rash of Beatings was the shit! The band name alone just lets you know they were gonna rule.

I liked Assück (I have always been a "short-haired fool", after all), but I haven't listened to them in years. I've been meaning to revisit that stuff to see how it holds up these days. Its trumpetlessness may indeed pose a severe problem.

  10. I was under the impression that it was the second record. The point about Rash of Beatings still stands though.

  11. gimme assuck over that wigger slam bullshit you douchebags pull your wires to.

  12. it really saddens me that so many people can't get into wigger slam. how someone could prefer assuck to Rest In Gore is completely beyond me.

  13. So I ordered the CD comp (does being younger than all you old bastards make me a poser? I was...7? when this came out), looks pretty fucking awesome though.

Also, how can someone not like Waking the Cadaver? GORE NOT CORE!

  15. I was in a band called Black Army Jacket that was on one of these comps. I can't remember which.

  16. hey, i remember black army jacket. i might have seen yous guys somewhere at some point.

anyway, i find it hilarious that ANYONE would take ANYTHING on this blog seriously enough to call us idiots or dbags, or whatever. not only here, but in other blogs. im very happy that the majority of people 'get it' tho.

sergeant beat me to it, i was thinking about doing a post on these 7"... dammit, all these people would be pissed at me and not him! i think my band covered 10-15 songs on the first 7" at one point of another...'member that?

about the assuck: i liked them, but everyone must admit that the drums on that shit were HORRIBLE and a mid-level fast death metal band of the time left assuck in the dust when it came to sheer speed and blast-beat awesomeness. plus the dudes (other than proctor) had short hair=eew! also umlauts on any non-metal band = LAME

    .

  17. I heard that one of the dudes from Assuck is credited in the liner notes of the Hulk Hogan Wrestling Boot Band album, which was recorded in their homestate of Florida.

  18. Concerning Assück: Yes, I was really annoyed too by Proctor's weird drumming on "Anticapital" - great songs, but the "blasts" were very disappointing.

But hey, he really pulled his socks up and on "Misery Index" his performance is awesome! Just listen to "Salt Mine" - what a hit!!! (Crap! Bedtime here, but with that song on repeat in my under-IQ:ed brain I won't fall asleep for a couple of hours.)

  20. assuck wasnt even the original line up by the mid 90's...they died around 92 then turned into a karaoke grind band, so you should know that if saw them around then.

the first two bleaurghs are great even the gay songs, but im partial to the second one with jams by jump back jesus and skimmed...

rupture had a killer 10"..corrupture i think... but they did release alot of shit too. you just have to wade thru it.

  21. This message is to Kirk...Jason here...No bad shit happened to me...Still around in Fayetteville, Ar.
Incedently R.O.B. is going to get back together to play one more show this summer in Ft. Smith. Get back with me I have been wondering about you...

  22. just saw the rash of beatings reuion show. fucking amazing. wicked. that 7" ages REALLY well. assuck...ugh. not very good. saw them in gainesville once, and it was really forgettable. heard great things about them, but i gave their entire set a good listen and found nothing there to keep me listening. i'm in 2 bands that quadiliacha fucked--petty shit, really, and they were't any good at all. getting screwed twice made them less likeable.

rash of beatings, though--holy shit. the first time i saw them i didn't realize how good they were. been listening to the 7" regularly ever since, and just saw the ft smith punk reunion last weekend where they played. excellent band, wish they'd reform.

i remember black army jacket. good band.

  24. Every band on these comps sucked donkey balls. Cept Anal Cunt, they shit all over ALL these bands.

Go ahead and call me stupid, I'm just telling how it is.

    1. Anal Cunt only received attention because of their name-musically they are garbage and the "chaos" Seth Putnam "created" came back to bite him in his ass because the dude is deceased now.
